It’s hard to see weight gain in a pet you love. The change is gradual, and a little extra fluff looks cute. But a healthy weight is one of the biggest levers you have over your pet’s comfort and lifespan.
The 10-second weight check you can do at home
- Ribs: run your hands along the sides. You should feel the ribs easily under a thin layer, like the back of your hand
- Waist: from above, look for a gentle hourglass tuck behind the ribs
- Profile: from the side, the belly should rise up toward the hips, not hang down
Why a few extra pounds matter
Excess weight strains the joints and heart and raises the risk of arthritis, diabetes, and breathing trouble. Keeping a pet lean has been linked to a longer, more comfortable life, and it’s genuinely one of the kindest things you can do.
A plan that actually works
- Measure meals with a real measuring cup or kitchen scale, because eyeballing adds up fast
- Count treats as part of the daily total; swap a few for green beans or an extra walk
- Add gentle, regular activity suited to your pet’s age and joints
- Rule out medical causes like thyroid problems with a quick exam
Crash diets are risky, especially for cats. Let’s set a healthy target weight together and a plan that fits your pet and your routine.
